The Seed wire strippers were a re-design undertaken for a client called Micron radio control. The re design addressed problems with the original wire strippers such as excessive stain on the users wrist when operating and the tool being prone to jamming.
These problems were addressed by increasing the range of motion required to actuate the strippers, and simplifying the design to create a open mechanism that allows the tool to easily evacuate itself of wire sheath. The trend for most modern tools is to be constructed it out of brightly coloured plastics over moulded with butyl rubber grips. This makes tools often look cheap and toy like. But with the Seed wire strippers I wanted to give the tool a classic look, like it has been handed down through the generations standing the test of time. To do this I used metal and cork in its construction. Cork a favourite material of mine I feel is undervalued in products today, it is compressible with a soft texture making it perfect for tool grips, and has natural flame retardant and anti bacterial properties, while being a material able to be harvested without felling trees. |
